Xerostomia Dry mouth that is a symptom of certain diseases or conditions. Some of the causes of xerostomia include: -Medication- these include analgesics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, tranquilizers, antihistamine, diuretics. -Cancer Therapy- chemotherapeutic drugs can change the flow and composition of the saliva. Radiation treatment focused at or near the affected area can temporarily or permanently damage the salivary glands. -Nerve Damage- trauma to the head and neck area from surgery or wounds can damage the sensory nerve supply to the oral cavity. Without a signal, a perfectly healthy salivary gland cannot produce any saliva. -Sjogren¹s Syndrome- An autoimmune disorder -Other Conditions- endocrine disorders, stress, anxiety, depression, bone marrow transplants, and nutritional deficiencies may also cause xerostomia. Xerostomia can be a source of eating and speaking difficulties. Individuals are also at greater risk for dental caries, periodontal disease and oral candidiasis.
