Gingiva (gum tissue)

The gingiva is the part of the oral mucosa that covers the alveolar processes of the jaws and surrounds the neck of teeth. It is classified as a keratinized masticatory mucosa.

The function of gingival epithelium is mechanical, chemical, water, and microbial barrier.

Clinically healthy gingiva is characterized by certain features of shape, color, and consistency.

-Its narrow band follows the scalloped contour of the necks of teeth and the cementoenamel junction.

-Gingiva of individuals with a northern European heritage is usually pale pink, coral, or mauve in color. In Mediterranean, African, and Asian populations, melanocytes may give a more or less dark color to the gingiva.

-Orange peel type stippling of the surface of the attached gingiva results from indentations lying at the crossing points of rete ridges of the oral gingival epithelium.
