What causes infections?

-Not all bugs are bad bugs

Not all bacteria found in the mouth are bad bugs.  In fact the majority of bacteria are needed to maintain a balance.

All the bacteria keep each other in check.  This keeps an even balance between them.

The majority are mutually dependent upon each other, scientifically termed "symbiosis", which means one is dependent upon another for survival.

-Why do we get infections?

-Infections are usually caused by either highly virulent bugs or a compromised host defenses ( as in  diabetes or other diseases).

-Infections can also occur when the balance between naturally present  bacteria is thrown off.  This leads to an increase in the the levels of one type of bacteria which enter the blood stream and then starts affecting the the whole body.

-Our body fights back with host defenses which help most of the time  the body tries to take over and put them back in check.  This process is is able to take care of the problem most times.  However when the number of bugs gets very high or they are resistant to the bodies response antibiotics are needed.

-Antibiotics can either destroy the bugs or stop them from multiplying.  At that point the body is able to recover.
