Cast Crown Dental crown, which is cast entirely from metal. The complete cast crown has the best longevity of all fixed restorations. The strength of a complete cast crown is superior to that of other restorations. Indicated on teeth that exhibit extensive coronal destruction by caries or trauma. It is the restoration of choice whenever maximum retention and resistance are needed. On short clinical crowns or when high displacement forces are anticipated such as for the retainer of a long-span fixed partial denture (dental bridge). Creation of a cast metal restoration involves a chain of stages from waxing on a die a pattern of the intended final restoration, investing the pattern to create a mold space for casting, casting the restoration, finishing and polishing the casting, and cementing the restoration intraorally. Cast metal may be used to form the entire restoration or may be designed as a substrate and veneered with porcelain to create a tooth colored restoration. Those that are veneered with porcelain may be generically described as porcelain bonded to metal (PBM), ceramic bonded to metal (CBM), or porcelain fused to metal (PFM) restorations.
